![]() ![]() They represent darkness and light as, if one were to oversimplify their roles, Hades is the god of death and Persephone is the goddess of life. Hades and Persephone are, in a sense, emblematic of the relationship between the yin and the yang. This taboo is exactly what seems to make romanticizing the two mythological characters fascinating. They begin a tentative romance that has yet to reach fruition after eighty-five episodes due to their age difference and the general taboo of their coupling ( Episode 1). Hades is a grumpy, wealthy bachelor and Persephone is a college student studying to become a sacred virgin. The widely popular web series takes place in a modern-day Olympus where the Greek gods still rule over the mortal realm and have adopted human technological advances, such as cars and phones. The weekly webcomic series Lore Olympus(2018–) by Rachel Smythe is a modern retelling of Greek mythology that mainly focuses on the story of Hades and Persephone, framing it as a slow-burn love story. My thesis is not only that the rape of Persephone tends to be romanticized in modern culture, but also that this is due to the fetishization of this “beauty and the beast” archetype of romance. Hades, perhaps the evilest figure in Greek mythology, fills the role of the beast well, while Persephone, a sweet and innocent young woman, fits the role of beauty. This may be largely due to the resemblance of the rape of Persephone to the tale of beauty and the beast. This change does not seem to occur with other mythological rape stories, which raises the question of why modern versions of Greek mythology insist upon romanticizing the story of Hades and Persephone. He writes that she was “Terrified, in tears,” and Cyane, in her plea to Hades, describes what she has seen of Persephone with “this girl, frightened and forced.” (Ovid Metamorphoses 5.399–419) However, many modern adaptations and iterations of their story frame their relationship as just that- loving and consensual. Even Ovid, who typically highlights comedic aspects of mythology over the more serious ones, still emphasizes how cruel the story of Persephone is. It seems obvious to say that their story is in no way a romantic or loving tale, as their marriage occurred against Persephone’s will and without her consent. As told by the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (7 th or 6 th century BC) and, much later, in the canonical version by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC – 17/18 AD) in the Metamorphoses, it is a story of stolen innocence and the division of a loving family, with the only cause being Hades’ rapacious lust. The story of the abduction and subsequent rape of Persephone, the young and beautiful goddess of spring, at the hands of Hades, the king of the Underworld, is a famous and heart-wrenching tale. Matt on The Story of Hades and Persephone: Rape and RomanceĬontemporary graphic novels romanticize the element of rape in the myth of Persophone in a way quite alien to the Greek and Roman sources of the story, argues Chloe Warner (’20) Persephone, by Rachel Smythe, from Lore Olympus, Episode 3 (2018).Michal Lynn Venetz on Hollywood and History: Pompeii (2014).Colleen White on Faith and Spectacle: Examining Quo Vadis (1951).Ron on Faith and Spectacle: Examining Quo Vadis (1951).Geometry Dash on The Story of Hades and Persephone: Rape and Romance.Katrina Faulkner: Elizabeth Jane Weston, The Pidgeon and the Painting (1606).Carl Hamilton: Elizabeth Jane Weston, The Flea and the Soldier (1606).Jack Tigani: Elizabeth Jane Weston, The Geese and the Cranes. ![]() Nicholas Morris: Elizabeth Jane Weston, The Sow and the Dog.Lexi Chroscinski: Elizabeth Jane Weston, The Captured Lark.Jocelyn Wright: Elizabeth Jane Weston, The Lion and the Frog.Metrics and Style in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. ![]()

Lasting roughly 4,000 hours, that's a new lamp every 2.5 years or so if you watch 4 hours a night. Each new lamp for the 5050 currently costs $330. I guess I need to incorporate "total cost of ownership" into my overall conclusion, as boring as that sounds. So it does look better, sure, but the 25% better implied by the price? Sort of. The color and brightness are good, the contrast is decent and the added detail over the 5050 is welcome. Does it look better, subjectively? Yes, but not as much as the additional $1,000 would imply. The LS11000 is more of a diagonal step from the 5050. I was expecting performance improvements across the board compared to the 5050, but that's not what I saw. ![]() (No, not that one, this one.) But I was surprised at the LS11000. I've been doing this for far too long and I've been a cynic ever since I learned I'd never own a flying gullwing sports car. ![]() I'm not one to be swayed by specs and promises. That lead extends with HDR, where it does a better job reproducing a wider color gamut than both the 5050 and the UHZ50. The difference isn't massive but the LS11000 is the best of the bunch. The LS11000 looks the most natural, and its colors look a little richer. With normal HD and 4K content, color is quite good on all three. Enough so that they seem roughly comparable, even side-by-side. The result is that the LS11000 looks far better, subjectively, than the numbers suggest. However, this mode is more useful on the LS11000, since this adjustment happens pretty much instantly, far faster than the mechanical iris on the 5050. Even the LS11000's dynamic contrast is lower, where the laser power tracks the brightness of incoming video signal and adjusts accordingly. I was so surprised by that result I kept remeasuring it. As measured by me, the 5050 has a far better native contrast ratio at 5,200:1 vs. So between those two projectors the LS11000 is definitely sharper, which makes sense because it has twice the resolution.Ĭomparing the two Epsons, however, is rather interesting. Epson's new pixel shifter shifts pixels 4x instead of 2x. That's one of the biggest changes from the 5050 to the LS11000. Instead, each pixel on the imager works double or quadruple duty, responsible for 2 or 4 pixels on screen. Ostensibly, all three of these projectors are 4K, but none have 3,840x2,160 pixel imaging chips (to get that you'll need to spend even more money). Sharpness is not the most important aspect of a projector's performance in my book, but differences in detail between the three were noticeable right away. ![]() I connected all three via a Monoprice 1x4 distribution amplifier, and viewed them on a 102-inch 1.0-gain screen. Perhaps one is more of a winner than the others? We shall see. I liked both of these projectors, so really, they're all winners. The 5050 is a traditional lamp-lit projector, but it's close in price and performance. Both are less expensive than the LS11000 but they have a lot in common. But then, for $4,000 the nits deserve to be picked.įor my side-by-side comparison I pitted the Epson LS11000 against Epson's own 5050 and the Optoma UHZ50. Among projectors we've reviewed, it's second only to the more expensive Sony VPL-VW325ES. The LS11000 is still a great projector, and all the new pieces and subtle changes - plus the benefits of using lasers - add up to an overall excellent image. Both delivered superb picture quality in my tests, with excellent color and bright, punchy images, but the performance of the next-gen LS11000 isn't the massive improvement implied by that new technology.ĭon't get me wrong. The LS11000 costs $1,000 more and promises a significant leap forward, with more pixels on screen and the aforementioned lasers. A lamp happens to power Epson's own Home Cinema 5050 too, a projector we loved and which stays in the company's lineup. The Epson Home Cinema LS11000 is a higher-end 4K projector powered by lasers rather than the traditional lamps used by most of its competitors. Performance doesn't quite justify the price Not as detailed as some 4K DLP projectors ![]() ![]() ![]() However, if 20 minutes of down and back doesn’t exactly have you quivering with excitement, there are plenty of ways to mix up your workout (similar to the difference between a track workout or tempo run versus a long, slow run). That’s along the lines of going for a run strictly to get more miles on your legs, and we all know there’s a time and place for that in many of our training cycles. You can certainly show up at the pool and simply plan to swim back and forth for 20 minutes, not worrying about pace or distance. “Have a purpose for your workout, whatever it is you plan to do,” says Billingsley. RELATED: Suspension Training for Runners: Getting Started Building Your Workout ![]() However, once you’ve learned to build some workouts you love, you might not find such technological assistance necessary. There are also a number of multi-sport watches and other swimming gadgets designed to help you keep track of your distance when swimming laps, and you can even find underwater headphones that let you listen to music. These aren’t considered crutches you’ll find elite swimmers utilizing these tools as well as novices. Many pools offer kickboards and pull buoys, but if you want to use a snorkel (which can be a helpful as it builds lung capacity and teaches you how to breath in a pattern), fins (there are many different kinds out there, each with slightly different functions), or hand paddles, you’ll likely need to bring your own. However, investing in a few tools can come in handy, and can help keep things interesting. One of the great things about swimming is that, if you have goggles and a swimsuit (and possibly a swim cap), you only need water in order to do your workout. With consistent training, they’ll improve and build endurance very quickly. That might only be 15 minutes to start, and that’s just fine. “To see where they’re starting, I’ll have a runner get in the pool and do a simple swim workout, maybe repeating 100s, until they are just done-with zero judgment on how long that takes,” he says. The number two issue he sees? Lack of ankle flexibility, which can throw off the way runners kick and can even lead to cramping. “It’s just an entirely different type of exercise.” All too often, that leads to the athletes becoming discouraged and not continuing on with their work in the pool, but he recommends athletes simply start out where they are and focus on building rather than getting discouraged about becoming fatigued. “The number one issue I see with runners who are just starting to swim is that they get in the pool and are immediately gassed,” says Billingsley. And he stresses the importance of remembering that, just because you can run for four hours, it doesn’t mean you’ll have great endurance in the pool-at least, not right away. Just as in running, you can base your swimming workouts on either time or distance but Patrick Billingsley, a coach for Palm Beach Masters in Florida who holds USMS Level 3 and USA Triathlon Level 1 certifications, always bases his workouts on time. RELATED: Become a Faster Runner With Strides Time vs. Now, if you’re comfortable in the water and can go down and back the length of the pool a few times, you’re ready to get started. (Here’s more information on swimming as an adult as well as resources to help you find someone to get you started.) If you do have fear or discomfort in the water, consider scheduling a few sessions with an instructor or group designed to help adult beginner swimmers. You will, however, need at least some level of comfort in the water. Masters Swim (USMS) Adult-Learn-to-Swim instructor, I believe they’re just doing the wrong workouts.īefore we dive into specific workout tips, it’s important to note that you do not need to be an experienced swimmer to glean the benefits of knocking out a few laps. They tend to either think it’s boring, or they find it too hard. Why is that? Well, the runners I know seem to have two major concerns when it comes to swimming for fitness. And yet, if you ask a room full of them how many swim as part of their training, you’re not likely to see a large show of hands. Swimming is a tremendously effective form of cross-training for runners. ![]() |
